macmillan coffee mornings…

September 25th, 2008

Is coffee good for cancer?  Only when it’s part of a MacMillan fundraising coffee morning. I’ve been invited to two tomorrow, by my friends Megan and Tiggy. I hope you never have to come across a MacMillan nurse, because if you do, it means you’re one of a huge number of people in this country who have been affected by cancer.  But as all of us who have come across them will know, they’re angels in the night.  When my mother was ill, one would come to our home every evening for the last few weeks of her life at around 7pm and sit in an armchair throughout the night.  She’d stay watching over her until around 7 in the morning.  It meant we could get a good nights sleep, and my mum had someone to help out in the night if she needed anything.  They’re usually slightly older nurses, and the presence of an older female figure in the house was immensely comforting to us.  Looking back it was incredibly poignant as we were going to lose our own mother shortly. http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Get_Involved/National_events/WBCM/WBCM_home.aspx?utm_campaign=Coffee_Morning&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=Google&utm_term=macmillan%20coffee%20mornings

If anyone reading this is going through treatment for cancer, or knows anyone who is, I came across a great idea this morning that I wish had been around when Mummy was ill.  Urban Retreat at Harrods are launching a special Nurture Card for anyone who buys a wig from Vicki Ullah’s Wig Boudoir.  Vicki has private rooms for consultations and works closely with the NHS to find out what chemotherapy patients really need and want.   If you’re experiencing hair loss as a result of medical treatment, you can get discounted services such as eyelash extensions, or comforting treatments like a Paraffin Wax Bath, massage or reflexology, and best of all, the card automatically entitles you to a free Creme de La Mer facial, and a goody bag with a whole range of products including a Guerlain Orchidee Imperial Moisturiser.  You can find out about this at http://www.urbanretreat.co.uk/default.aspx?PageID=407 or call 020 7893 8333.

Hi Kathleen -It’s Natalie from Frank! I spotted your blog on the Web. I also ran my own coffee morning yesterday with friends at my local Starbucks. It felt really special doing something for such a good cause. Natalie x
